July 27th Basketball Camp - Houston TX
After all the sign-in and drop off happened early Monday morning, the Professional Basketball Players quickly stretched the players out so they could get to learning the game of basketball. The Houston area basketball players were split into groups by age and level first so that each Professional Basketball Player could teach them at their level. The older kids were also split between counselors so they could develop their own teams and compete against the other Summer Campers and Counselors. This allowed the kids attending the camp to get a more individualized lesson on basic to advanced basketball techniques.
Coach Jared Lyons Explains here
Coach Lamar Roberson a player recently signed to play in Portugal's 1st league, wanted his kids to concentrate on hitting shots. He felt that to win against the other counselors, you had to knock down the shot. He made them start over a few times to make sure they knew he wanted them to hit the shots and not just throw the basketball to the goal. This technique worked because before this video, everyone kept missing their shot.
Take A look at Lamar Roberson Explaining
Coach Dallas Blacklock wanted to make sure his team was very solid on the defensive end. He said he believed that great defense creates a good offense. When a ball is passed to the peron you are gaurding, a player should position himself so he can kinda tell the offensive player wherehe wants them to go. Here you will see him making sure that his team is in a solid basketball defensive position and on the ball when it is passed.
Look at Dallas Blacklock's Defensive Practice
While Dallas Blacklock's team was working on defense and Lamar Roberson's team was working on getting his teams shots right, Coach Clifford Franks concentrated on running plays to make sure his team played together. He ran a lot of plays in which the gaurd would look downlow for the big man, and if not, passed and picked the other wing defender.

Jared Lyons wanted to make sure that his team practiced on a few offensive plays and a zone defense. He taught how to run the 2-3 effectively and showed the Houston Hoopstars where they are suppose to be defensively. The 2-3 defense is a common defense used on all level of basketball and essential to know. Jared Lyons did a great job stretching everyone out and making sure the campers were seperated effectively, based on skill and grade.

Lamar Roberson, Dallas Blacklock, Clifford Franks and the rest of the Professional athletes/counselors were in a competition with each other telling each other how their team would win. Lamar Roberson's team is supposed to be the favorite going in. He says he won the camp tournament last year and this months camp should be no different.

Adam Barnes worked very well with the younger group of future hoopstars coming up in Houston. His work took a lot of patience and explaining so that each of these young hoopstars could learn basketball. I heard him tell the players they were only allowed three dribbles at the most then a pass. Check out his personal site for more good basketball info http://www.coachbarnes.org/

Coach Egwatu worked with the younger hoopstars as well. Like last camp, he had them working on a lot of dribbling drills since in Finland, he is known for his ball handling skills. He did his one handed cone drill like he did in the last camp and had the summer campers repeat a number on his fingers as they dribbled so that they could practice with their head up.
